What a 200 amp service upgrade actually means
Your electrical panel is the hub where power from BC Hydro or FortisBC enters your home and gets divided into individual circuits. The amp rating of your service tells you how much power your home can safely draw at once. Many older Vernon homes were built with 60 amp or 100 amp services, which made sense when a house had a fridge, a range, a few lights and not much else.
Today's homes ask a lot more. Electric heat, air conditioning, induction cooktops, home offices, hot tubs and electric vehicles all add up. A 200 amp service is now the standard for most single family homes, and it gives you the headroom to add those loads without constantly bumping into limits.
An upgrade usually includes more than the panel itself. Depending on your home it can involve a new meter base, new service entrance conductors, a new mast or underground service, updated grounding and bonding, and sometimes moving the panel to a location that meets current code. We look at the whole picture so you are not surprised halfway through.
Signs your Vernon home may need a panel upgrade
Not every home needs a new panel, and we will tell you honestly if yours does not. That said, there are some common signs worth paying attention to.
- Breakers trip often, especially when several appliances run together.
- Lights dim or flicker when the furnace, well pump or a large appliance starts.
- Your panel is 100 amps or less and you are planning to add a major load.
- The panel is an older brand or model with a known history of problems, or replacement breakers are hard to find.
- You see rust, scorch marks, a warm panel cover or hear buzzing from the panel.
- There are no spare spaces left and circuits have been doubled up on breakers.
- Your insurance company has asked about the age or type of your electrical panel.
- You are renovating and the permit requires the service to be brought up to current standards.
Why homeowners choose a 200 amp panel upgrade in Vernon
For most households, 200 amps hits the sweet spot. It comfortably supports a typical family home with electric appliances, a heat pump and room for one or two big additions like an EV charger or hot tub. It also gives you plenty of breaker spaces, so future projects do not require squeezing circuits together.
A new panel brings modern protection too. Current panels accept arc fault and ground fault breakers that help protect against wiring faults and shock hazards. Many homeowners also tell us they simply sleep better knowing the oldest, most stressed part of their electrical system has been replaced with clean, labelled, well organized equipment.
There is a resale angle as well. Buyers and home inspectors in the North Okanagan pay close attention to the electrical service. A properly permitted 200 amp upgrade with a tidy, clearly labelled panel is a genuine selling point.
Load calculations: making sure 200 amps is the right size
Before we recommend anything, we do a load calculation based on the Canadian Electrical Code as adopted in British Columbia. That means looking at your home's square footage, heating type, major appliances and anything you plan to add in the next few years.
Sometimes the numbers show that 200 amps is more than enough. Other times, especially on larger homes or acreages with shops, all electric heat and multiple EVs, a 400 amp service makes more sense. And occasionally a load management device lets you add an EV charger without a full service upgrade at all. We will lay out the options in plain language so you can make the call that fits your home and budget.
Permits, inspections and BC Hydro coordination
Every service upgrade in BC needs an electrical permit, and the work is inspected by Technical Safety BC. As a TSBC registered contractor led by a Red Seal Field Safety Representative, we pull the permit, follow the inspection requirements and handle the paperwork for you.
A service upgrade also involves your utility. Depending on where you live, that is BC Hydro or FortisBC. They need to disconnect power at the start and reconnect once the new service is approved. We coordinate those steps and let you know ahead of time when the power will be off, so you can plan your day around it.
If the upgrade requires changes to the overhead drop or the underground service from the street, the utility may have its own design and scheduling process. We explain what to expect and keep you posted, because those timelines are outside anyone's direct control.
What to expect on installation day
Most 200 amp panel upgrades are completed in a single working day, although homes with more complex service changes can take longer. Here is roughly how the day goes.
We arrive on time, protect your floors and walk you through the plan. Once the utility disconnects the service, we remove the old panel and install the new one, along with any meter base, mast or grounding work. Each existing circuit is carefully reconnected, tested and labelled so you can actually read your panel next time you need it.
When the work passes the required checks, power is restored. Before we leave, we clean up, show you the new panel, explain the breakers and answer any questions. Attention to detail matters to us, and we want the finished install to look as good as it works.
Older homes and common surprises
Vernon has a lot of character homes, and older electrical systems sometimes hold surprises. We regularly find ungrounded circuits, aluminum branch wiring, undersized conductors or past do it yourself work behind old panels. When we find something that affects safety or code compliance, we stop, show you, and explain your options before going further.
Our goal is no surprises on your bill. Our written estimate spells out what is included, and if something unexpected turns up we talk with you before doing any extra work. That is part of what we mean by competitive and fair pricing.
Planning ahead: EV chargers, heat pumps and hot tubs
A lot of the 200 amp upgrades we do in Vernon start with a specific goal. Maybe you just bought an electric car, or you are swapping an old furnace for a heat pump to handle our hot summers and cold winters. Maybe the hot tub is finally happening.
If you know what is coming, tell us. We can plan breaker spaces, conduit routes and panel location so the next project is quick and tidy instead of a second round of disruption. A little planning now can save time and money later.
200 amp upgrades across Vernon and the North Okanagan
We are based in Vernon and work throughout the surrounding communities. In Coldstream and Lavington we see a mix of established homes and newer builds that are adding heat pumps and EV chargers. In the BX, Swan Lake and Commonage, acreage properties often have long service runs, detached shops and well pumps that all factor into the load.
Up at Silver Star, cold winters and snow load mean we pay close attention to meter base placement and mast strength. In Lumby, Armstrong and Spallumcheen, older farmhouses and rural homes are common candidates for upgrades from 60 or 100 amp services. To the south, homeowners in Lake Country, Oyama, Winfield, Okanagan Centre, Carr's Landing and Predator Ridge often upgrade during renovations or when adding pools, hot tubs and suites.
Wherever you are between Armstrong and Lake Country, you get the same local team, the same careful workmanship and a clear plan before work begins.
